Tips on Growing Daffodils
Daffodils, also known as narcissus, is a spring flowering bulb which is native to the Europe and Asia. Daffodil has a trumpet like flower that is shaped like a star. Daffodil are available in 50 species with over 13,000 hybrids. The color of the daffodil blossoms ranges from yellow, white, orange, and pink. The corona in the middle of the daffodil flower shaped like a trumpet. The rings of petals appears around the corona. In most blossoms, the background color of the daffodil is golden yellow while the trumpet has a different color which stands out in a different color. First, you must choose the varieties of daffodils to grow. Daffodil is available in different colors including yellow, orange, cream, pink and white. Some varieties can produce large flower cups while others offer double blossoms. You can purchase the bulbs for daffodils from your local garden store or seed catalog. You should not shop at discount store because their seed are of low quality. Low quality seeds will have problem in germinating. Before buying a bulb, make sure that it is firm and not hollow. The daffodil bulb must smell good and look fresh. Large bulbs have the ability to produce larger plants. The best time to purchase the bulb is during the fall before you will plant them.
Before the first frost, you should plant the daffodils in the ground. This allows the plant to develop root and adapt itself to the upcoming winter. Daffodils prefer site that is exposed to the partial sunlight. Daffodils can grow in a crowded bed so you only have to set a few inches of space between the bulbs. In addition, the site should have a good drainage system so that the water can absorb easily in the ground. Daffodils will not perform well in wet soil.
